My husband and l are looking at purchasing a 2000 Hyundai Elantra with 73,000 miles on it for a real deal.Does anyone have any comments on how their Elantra worked out or any tips on what to watch out for?

Our first baby is due in June, so if anyone has any safety concerns that they feel we should be aware of, l would appreciate it.Thanks!

The crash test ratings are not the best on the Hyundai Elantra is but they are generally reliable cars, l have a friend who owns one (automatic transmission) and it is been a very reliable car for her, her daughter also owns one but hers is a stick shift and it is also a very reliable car.

Do some research on the vehicle at edmunds.com. They should include crash ratings and reliability ratings in the review and customer review sections.

Mileage wise, it is not a bad buy. Reliability on Hyundais have always been good, reguardless of reputation. Safety might leave something to be desired.

Well l looked at purchaseing one about 7 months ago .2004.we drove it and it was really nice.had many options..like sun and sound package and leather. l really liked it and it drove well .it had about 63k miles on it.we ended up not buying it b/c of intrest .so we purchased a 2004 olds. Alero.
Other than that They are really great and and get good mpg

As far as safety goes, the Elantra ai not no Hummer or Escalade but it is not bad. Hyundais are generally reliable so if it is a good deal go for it, just make sure that at that milage the timing belt has been changed and that you take it for a test drive to see how it runs. Good luck!

l purchased a 2003 Elantra for my wife new, It has 120,000 miles on it & has prove to be very good in all areas, l will recommend it to anyone, be sure to do a back ground check as with all used cars it may have had some past problem u need to know about. A timing belt will be needed at 80,000 miles at around 400.00 so be careful & compare the price of a new one as well there not that expensive & r good cars far quieter than Toyota & Honda & far better l have owned all three, the Elantra is best. Good Luck & GOD Bless.

as long as it has been service at the correct intervals it will not be a problem. a very reliable car and a good buy.

They r good cars but have some issues. They used a timing belt not a timing chain so u might have to replace that but find out from the owner. Secondly, they had an airbag sensor recall. Find out if the recall has been addressed. Call ur insurance company & ask them about rates & overall rating from a safety point of view.

l personally like the elantra but just be an educated buyer before u make the purchase. Good luck on the car & congrats on the new baby!

we have owned & still own elantras. My daughter totaled her 2002 elantra 3 years ago. She was driving too fast, failed to negotiate a sharp curve & hit a tree head-on. Luckily she was wearing her seat belt, no injuries. The cop is were even amazed after looking at the car. Just make sure the belts have been changed or that could run into a big expense also the other maintenance has been done on a regular basis-oil changes, etc We also owned a civic which we did not like-very noisy & uncomfortable riding car- good resale & good manual transmission It was an 05, bought new, we sold it
