I own a 2001 Hyndai Elantra, and for some reason, out of the blue, it won't start.

l turn my car 'on' and you can hear the fuel pump, so that is ruled out.
It does not really sound like the starter has gone out.
It just sounds like my car can not start.
It is trying to, but for some reason it won't.
The weird thing is, it was fine yesterday. No problems starting up whatsoever. Now, all of a sudden nothing is happening.

l have gas in the car, a little under half of a tank, but l just need to know what might be the problem and if it is going to cost me a lot to fix whatever is going on.

Any at home solutions will be greatly appreciated. I am using a laptop so l can sit outside and try things that people suggest.
Thank you very much

Could be low battery or alternator not charging it properly. May be spark plugs, wires or ignition coil. Need more info. Is there crank but no fire? Can u hear the engine turning over?

If u got nothing but idiot lights when u turned the key, & if it was a manual transmission, I'd say it was the ignition lock switch behind the clutch pedal.

If the engine cranks, it could be many things. The best thing would be to spend the $80 (give or take) on a professional diagnosis from ur local Hyundai dealer. They have access to manuals & technical help that small shops do not have. There also may be recalls on ur vehicle that have not been performed yet. Most times, if u end up having the work completed by them, they will either waive or incorporate the diagnosis fee.

Well, it reminded me of my mom when she had that same problem that time with her Hyundai Matrix 2005(?) as it turned out the alarm system malfunctioned along with Hyundai is anti auto-theft system thingy and the car just became immovable in the middle of the road as the engine and everything else was working but the car just wont run.

Your battery needs to be strong. If the car cranks over at a typical speed then l am sure it is ok.

You need fuel & u seem to be getting it. Confirm by removing the air filter & smelling for fuel around the intake.

Verify that the spark plugs r providing a spark. If u remove one after cranking for a few seconds & it is wet it may not be firing.
If it is dry then u know it is firing & u would also hear u car trying to start.

Check to make sure ur timing belt is not broken. Remove oil filler cap & use a flash to watch the camshaft. It needs to move while the engine is cranking over. If it does not move then it will need to be replaced.
