Hi l am looking at a 1993 model Hyundai which will not start unless the clutch is fully depressed, l figure it is more then likely fault then feature as that would mean that you could not clutch start the car if need be. does anyone know anything about this model in particular ? please do not juststate the obvious just for points l already know that clutch starting is going to be a major problem.

OK, my Ford requires the clutch to be pressed in before starting. It is a safety feature. HOWever if you need to press all the way to the floor either the clutch fluid reservoir is low or the clutch plate is worn out. If the clutch slips on a hill (up) then the plates are worn and need to be replace. If the fluid is low then there may be a leak in the clutch line.

l owned a 97 Elantra and from what l know, from talking to mechanics and working for the company for a while, is that the older model Hyundai is require the cluctch to be ''in'' before the car will start - it is a safety feature of the vehicle. It may be that this vehicles clutch is on it is way out and needs replacing, but you will always have to push the clutch in to start it.

l have a Ford F250 with the same identical features as yours; requiring the clutch to be depressed to turn the starter. When l am parked facing downhill, l turn on the ignition, keep the tranny in gear, then press down on the clutch to let the truck slowly roll forward on its own. When it reaches 5 MPH speed, l pop the clutch, & the engine starts up with no problem. You can experiment & try parking while facing downhill, then replicate what I've described. You will find that the engine will turn over & start with no problem, so long as u give it some throttle just as u pop the clutch.

If the vehicle is cable clutch try adjusting the nut on the trans cable to snug it up a little better, this will pull the slack out from years of use. My 91 Honda did the same until l tighten it up. The cable is not pulling far enough to engage the throw out bearing on the trans. If it is hydraulic clutch double check fluid, maybe bleed it out for a possible air pocket, & check the slack on the cable also. The more worn the clutch plates r the further the cable has to reach, just do not over tighten it does not take much.

All straight shift cars now days require the clutch to be fully depressed for the car to start. My 1990 Chevy requires the same.. would you want the car to start in gear?

l have a Hyundai excel 1998 which is similar to your model and l have always had to put the clutch in to start it, most manual cars need the clutch in to start. It is possible to clutch start the car with this feature, just do everything as per usual.

It has nothing to do with a worn clutch or fluid or anything else.

It is a standard feature of the car & is there for safety reasons. Lets just say a child got into ur car & u left the keys in the ignition - wouldnt it be much safer if the car couldnt start??? Most younger kids who dont know the dangers wouldnt be able to press the pedal & start the car!!!

There is an electrical switch located just above the pedal pivot which can be adjusted if the pedal needs to be pushed hard up against the floor to be able to start the car.

About clutch starting the car - You dont engage the starter motor anyway. It works on engine compression.

That is a safty feature, so you do not start the car with the car in gear. That is how my 2001 Tiburon works as well.
