My 2003 Elantra with automatic transmission makes a strange noise (like a snarl or rattle) for 1-2 seconds after shifting gears up or down. This happens frequently but not always. There is also often a slight kick or hiccup when shifting gears. What could cause these problems?
Thanks for your . l bought the car used in February. The noise was there from the beginning, but l think it is getting worse.

l know you said it does it frequently but not always, but has it always done this as long as you've owned the car if it is been awhile? l ask because if so, it may just be the nature of the transmission. My '97 Mercury Tracer shifts kind of harshly, but from what l understand, it is just the way it operates.

The concern you're having is not uncommon. Your local Hyundai dealer will have the equipment needed for the repair. It may need a reprogramming of the computer or it may need a transmission. The problem with large systems like that is the inability to view the moving parts inside without taking it apart. Get a diagnosis by a qualified shop.

Below r actual titles to a couple of service bulletins Hyundai has garnered over the years with regard to the 2003 Elantra. They r simple computer reprograms.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE HARSH AND/OR DELAYED UPSHIFT OR DOWNSHIFT - GDS ANALYSIS

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE HARSH AND/OR DELAYED ENGAGEMENT INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE

If u r the original owner, u have the 10 year/ 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Most problems with the transmissions should be covered under this. There may also be a 'trouble code' in the computer that will help the tech determine the problem.

Sure, get a Honda & the wheels may come off or the brake lights may not come on during braking. http://lemonauto.com/complaints/honda/honda_civic.htm
No car is perfect.

Anyway, as Ginger said u really can not tell what is going on without dropping the trans & looking in it.
If u r under 60,000 miles even as the second owner u may still be under warranty. The dealer may cut u a break if ur just past the years or miles (dealer may cut some miles off the numbers to help you).
If there r TSB is the dealer will know what to do but keep in mind TSB is r not recalls. If it is an older one u may have to pay for the repair.

l hate it when people just talk out their a$$ & just assume the worst without looking at the problem fully. You will run into people like ''free shyne'' but the thing to do is get a professional opinion. People, who do not have experience with Hyundai is always think the worst when a ''Hyundai'' has a problem. l had a transmission problem one time. Everyone was sure that it was bad because it was a ''Hyundai''. Took it to a real tranns tech & it turned out to be a bad $75 sensor & nothing else. Always eliminate the small things first.
Good Luck.
