My fiance parked his car and then shut it off. He forgot to put the windows up so when he went to turn the car back on (yes, it is in Park) the key would not turn at all. Not to On, Start, or Acc. The wheel is NOT locked either. Any ideas? Battery is not dead l do not think. The chime that lets you know the key is still in the ignition after the car is off still chimes.
He has tried turning the wheel to the right and left while turning the key in the ignition. Nothing. The tires and the steering wheel are actually straight. Just went out and checked on him again. He has locked the steering wheel trying to do this, so its definitely NOT that problem. We've tried pushing on the brake pedal, too... Maybe he needs a new ignition?
We got some WD 40 and sprayed some into the ignition, not expecting it to work. It did :) Starts up like new, now :) So l guess we WONT be getting the cylider replaced.

Did you try turning the wheel just a bit to see if that would let you turn the key??

Turn the steering wheel hard left and try again. Even though the steering is not locked, my Sonata used to do that sometimes. Also, sometimes it would not start unless my foot was on the brake. Good luck.

Like the above said.

When the steering wheel is turned to the right most or the left most that it can, you cannot turn the key.

Put some force on the steering wheel to hold it back more midline, and the key will turn.

You will need to have the ignition lock cylinder replaced. Unfortunately, this looks like it is going to be an issue with the Sonata at around 50K to 70K miles. The tumblers in the lock cylinder are sticking and the only fix l have found is a new ignition lock. This is covered under the 5/60 warranty if yours is under 60K. If your out of warranty, take it to a locksmith, they may can replace the tumblers in the lock, if not Hyundai part number 81920-3KA10 will fix the problem.
